Wed 1st July 2015 - Yarmouth Green and Norton Spit. GG # 591.

Carrie's Photographs.

Mark's Photographs.

With record breaking temperatures across the South of England and being "at the sea side", we thought that Mark might bring a van full of deck chairs and ice creams….?  But then again, this is Green Gym - so it turned out to be full of litter pickers, black bags and gardening forks! We were tasked to give the Green's planted areas a makeover and litter pick the entire area, including across the bridge at Norton Spit. Considering that this area had hosted the Old Gaffers Festival just a couple of weeks before, the amount of litter collected was far less than previous years when GG had undertaken this task. So, we will have to give Yarmouth about 9/10 for their litter management - well done! The planted areas had been treated with weed killer, some time previously, so it was a matter of clearing all the dead material away and turning over the ground with a fork. The forecasted thunderstorms didn't materialise although we did have a very light sprinkling of rain and could hear the thunder rumbling in the far distance. The majority of the time it was VERY hot and sunny with high humidity. By the end of the session the whole area looked spick and span, all ready for the influx of summer visitors and local dog walkers.

A Health Warning.

Although I had tucked my trousers into my socks AND was wearing rigger boots for GG this week, some nasty little critter managed to bite me several times on the lower leg. This reminded me of a recent item shown on the BBC Countryfile programme which highlighted the growing problem, in the UK, of  tick bites. I don't wish to alarm everyone but….. it might be worth having a look at the following link. As the old boy scout motto states "Be prepared"!

Many thanks to Carrie and Mark for supplying the photographs this week.
